Using the Online Claims System in New Mexico

You may be wondering how to apply for unemployment in New Mexico online. If so, you are not alone, and the state makes it relatively simple by allowing workers to file their initial unemployment claims using the online Workforce Connection System.

To start the NM unemployment registration process, you must log onto the site and visit the Insurance Tax & Claims page. Here, you will create a unique username and password that will allow you to access your account and view the status of your information at any time. The Workforce Connection System will require you to create a separate username and password before you can complete this step.

The online application for unemployment will take at least 30 minutes to complete, and you will use the same system to claim unemployment benefits on a weekly basis if you are granted benefits. If you wish to receive your benefits on time, the state recommends that all recipients file their online claim between 4:00 am and 9:00 pm Sunday through Friday.

Applying for Unemployment Benefits by Phone in New Mexico

In terms of where to apply for unemployment in New Mexico, utilizing the online system is much the easiest way to file your claim. However, filing for federal unemployment benefits by phone is allowed in the state as well.

Filing an NM unemployment EDD application over the phone takes a longer time, but you can place a toll-free call to the state Unemployment Insurance Operations Center. The center is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, and while filing the unemployment benefits claim, you will speak directly with a customer service representative who will ask you a series of questions.

If you do not speak English, you can elect to have a Spanish-speaking representative complete your application. In any case, if you hang up or are disconnected at any time during the conversation, you will be required to submit all of your unemployment registration information again, so be sure to use a phone with reliable reception.

Information Needed to File an Unemployment Claim in New Mexico

Whether you decide to file for unemployment in New Mexico by phone or online, you will need to have certain pieces of information within your reach. Having this personal and professional information on hand can greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your claim. During the NM unemployment registration, you will need the following information:

  • Personal contact information
  • Social security number (or work authorization number if non-citizen)
  • Names and addresses of previous employers
  • Start and end date of each job
  • Relevant salary information

The state suggests having a sheet of paper and pencil to write down important information and your confirmation details. If you are working part-time while receiving benefits, you will need to report the gross amount of income you earned during the week.

After you file for unemployment, please take the time to update your contact information if you move. Workers who fail to update their address are at risk of having their benefits mailed to the incorrect location. The state will also need this information in case a representative needs to reach you directly.

Registering for Work in New Mexico

After you file for an unemployment claim in New Mexico, you will have 14 days to register for work. You can register online via the Workforce Connection System or you can visit a Workforce Connection Center in person.

As you start filing for unemployment in NM, you will be required to provide information about your job-search efforts, and you must reach out to at least two different employers on a weekly basis. When reporting contacts, please have the name, address and phone number of the employer ready to provide.

In the event that you fail to register for work, you will automatically be denied unemployment benefits. If you fail to report two different contacts, you will not receive benefits for that particular week.
